Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 25th November 2012

On a blustery November morning, Bergholt Heath Under 8s took on Stanway Villa Reds in a friendly match due to both teams having a free week in their respective leagues.  As seems to be the case in most Under 8 matches nowadays, the boys seem to take a little while to get into the game and within 5 minutes Stanway took an early 2-goal lead. The rest of the first half was played mostly in the Bergholt half but the defence held firm. HT 0-2.

The second half was a different affair with Bergholt showing more attacking flair and they got they reward when Theo was pushed off the ball just outside the area to gain a free-kick. He stepped up to take it himself and hit a wondrous strike which flew into the roof of the Stanway net. This gave Bergholt a big lift and they started to take the game more to Stanway in order to get the equaliser. However, in one of the Stanway attacks a blocked shot spun high in to the air, it bounced just in front of Daniel in the Bergholt goal but unfortunately the spin took it away from his grasp and straight into the path of a Stanway striker. He coolly slotted the ball home to make the final score 1-3. A really good performance against a strong Stanway side. Well played to both teams.

The Under 10s 'home' match Vs Bures United - due to be played at Bures due to the continued unavailability of the Poors Field - was unsurprisingly postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. In fact it was almost under water!

Contrastingly, the pitch at Long Melford for the Under 14s was in good condition given the weather in the previous 24 hours. The Under 14s took to the pitch with a warning from the manager about the importance of winning matches, and duly put in a much more spirited performance than the previous week. Bergholt took the game to Long Melford with some crisp incise passing and after a few half chances, Bergholt took the lead mid way through the first half when a neat exchange of passes saw James Holden lay the ball back to new signing Max Booth just outside the area and he rifled his shot into the roof of the net. The Bergholt 'keeper was a virtual spectator as the game continued to be played in the Melford half.  A few minutes before half time the second goal Bergholt deserved came when a superb run, a cross by Owen Bernhardt from the right, saw James Holden head into the net unchallenged inside the 6 yard box. The second half started in much the same way and soon it was 3-0, Ollie Sanderson getting on the score sheet. The game was starting to get stretched with Bergholt piling forward, sometimes a little gung-ho, but mid way through the half the fourth Bergholt goal arrived, again Ollie Sanderson was there to stab home after a game of ricochet in the Melford area.  Unfortunately a clean sheet wasn't to be as, after another period of pressure, a couple of Bergholt defenders were caught thinking themselves to be midfielders, leaving Melford to break 3 on 2, with the striker doing enough to get the ball into the corner of the Bergholt goal. However this did not affect the game too much as another good passing move saw James Holden released in the inside right channel and he coolly passed the ball into the net as the Melford keeper advanced to the edge of his area. With the last kick of the match Melford pulled another goal back courtesy of the wind! The ball was played forward by Melford but headed clear by the Bergholt defence. As the ball dropped a Melford player in the centre circle volleyed it high into the air where it was caught by the wind to look like it was flying off for a goal kick. However a sharp gust saw the ball veer back in the direction of the goal and over the Bergholt 'keeper into the net. Final score: Long Melford 2-5 Bergholt Heath. Bergholt 'man of the match': Max Booth.

The main pitch on the Poors Field was in almost perfect condition for the Under 18s game against Broomfield Youth Blues. A pulsating match saw Bergholt run out 4-3 winners. Andy Parsons, Jack Lugar, Alex Enright and Nathan Swampillai scoring the Bergholt goals.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 18th November 2012

Our Under 8s were away to Oyster Youth and apart from a crazy 5 minute spell when the home side scored all 3 goals in the match, the game was played in the home half. Unfortunately Bergholt didn't manage to score that all important goal (or 3).

The Under 10s had a "free" weekend, so no doubt the players were dragged off to start the Christmas shopping!

Top of the table Cornard United visited the Poors field to play our Under 14s. It was 3-1 to Cornard at half time but obviously a few words were said by the manager during the break as in the second half the score line was an even 1-1 draw! Final result: Bergholt Heath 2-4 Cornard United.  Bergholt goal scorers were Ollie Sanderson and James Holden. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': Harry Dixon.

The Under 18s were away to Layer Colts and came away with a 2-2 draw.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 11th November 2012

On a crisp, sunny Remembrance Sunday afternoon at the picturesque venue of Bures, which kindly hosted the home match scheduled for the Poors Field, Bergholt Heath Under 8s got their best result of the season and finally ended their losing run.  After a minute's silence, impeccably observed by players and spectators alike, the first half was a very even affair with both defences getting the better of the forwards.  The second half saw Bergholt Heath have slightly the more possession and opportunities on goal but they just couldn't turn this into actual goals.  A very enjoyable game to play in and watch. FT 0-0.

Unfortunately the Under 10s match away at Wivenhoe was postponed by the home team due to an "unplayable" pitch - interesting considering the Under 14s were there on the pitch next to it, and they both looked in very good condition!

Away at Wivenhoe, the Under 14s turned in yet another lacklustre display, especially in midfield, which is becoming a too regular occurrence.   Right from the first whistle midfield passes were going straight to the opposition and runners were waltzing their way through to be up against the Bergholt defence 3 or 4 times in the opening minutes.  However against the run of play, Bergholt won a free kick for a foul on Ollie Sanderson a good 30 yards from goal.  Ollie dusted himself off to fire a shot high into the net for a lead that to be honest was undeserved.  Wivenhoe continued to plug away and from yet another attacking move, they equalised with a low shot into the corner of the net.  Just before half time Bergholt got their noses in front again, courtesy of an own goal - the defender firing into his own net as he chased a long through ball.   Presumably he was trying to put it out for a corner.  HT: 1-2.  Half time saw the manager remind the players of their jobs, but within two minutes of the second half Wivenhoe equalised again when a corner hit a Bergholt player and bounced into the net for the second OG of the match!  After this Wivenhoe had their tails up and it was back to the first half pattern when it became Wivenhoe vs the Bergholt defence and goalkeeper - who continued with his first half display pulling off another 3 or 4 top class saves.  Mid way through the half it was 3-2 to the home team when the striker was played through on the right channel and he turned to shot a superb shot from an angle.  4-2 came 10 minutes from time when the left winger was allowed space to hit an inviting cross into an area full of players who had taken a chance to flood forward without the Bergholt players going with them, and the striker headed powerfully into the net.  Bergholt had just one clear cut opportunity a few minutes from time, but the ball was rolled the wrong side of the post with the goal unguarded.  Final result: Wivenhoe Youth Blues 4 - 2 Bergholt Heath.  Bergholt 'man of the match': Connor Welfare.

The only home match of the weekend at 2pm on the Poors Field, saw the Under 18s comfortably beat Feering 2-0.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 4th November 2012

Both our Under 8s, away to Rowhedge, and our Under 10s, away to Reed Hall, had their scheduled matches postponed due to water logged pitches.

The Under 14s had a 'free' week in the league and took advantage of this to play a friendly at home against Colchester Athletic. Bergholt included a couple of new faces in the team, who they hope to sign in the coming weeks, and ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. The Bergholt Heath goals came from Sam Clark, Oliver Sanderson (penalty) and two from one of the new players, Callum Griffiths. Oliver Sanderson was "man of the match" for Bergholt.

The Under 18s were the only team to play a scheduled leage game, at home to Maldon Saints and won 2-1. Alex Bartlett scoring both Bergholt goals.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 28th October 2012

On a cold and rainy Sunday morning, Bergholt Heath Under-8s took on Lexden Saints buoyed by a good performance last week. Although the home team had the majority of the play in the first half, it was the visitors who went into the break one-nil up after a mix-up between the Bergholt keeper and defence. It was an early goal but this didn't dishearten Bergholt and they nearly scored an equaliser when their goalbound effort was pushed round the post by the Lexden keeper.

The second half saw no let up in the weather or Bergholt's desire to get the equaliser. Bergholt had a number of chances but couldn't find the back of the net, whilst everyone lost count of the number of corners Bergholt had!  Unfortunately, as is the case too often this season, Bergholt were caught out by the counter-attack and a fabulous strike by the Lexden striker put the game beyond the reach of the home team. This was one of few chances Lexden were restricted to, depicted by frozen figure of Daniel in the Bergholt goal. Final score 0-2. Well played to both teams and well done to Lexden on their win.

Our Under-10s were also at home, verses Marks Tey, and a dominant performance saw Bergholt get back to winning ways to win by a huge margin: 10 goals to nil! The Bergholt Heath goal scorers were: Tyler Webb x 3, Daniel Thomson x 2 and one each for Benjamin Sams, Matthew Sanderson, Nathaniel Lerwill, Richard Frost and Thomas Whitlow. Well done boys!

The Under-14s league cup game at Feering was postponed due to the home team not being able to field a team. This should see Bergholt through to the next round by default.

The Under-18s were away to Arlesford Colune Rangers and came away with a creditbale 2-2 draw.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 21st October 2012

Our under 8s were away to Feering Falcons and the Bergholt boys showed their resilience this week after last week's heavy defeat. Right from the outset they looked like a different team and matched Feering for possession, the only difference being that Feering managed to score 2 goals in the first half. All credit to Bergholt as their heads did not drop as they knew they could still get a result from the game and they were rewarded for their self-belief when James Pomphrett scored a brilliant solo goal. However, as is often the case in football, the scoring team switched off after the goal and conceded soon after. This was soon followed by another, but Bergholt rallied and were then the most likely to score next. However, this wasn't to be and the final score was 4-1 to Feering.

The under 10s were at home to Colchester Athletic and the manager's warning a few weeks ago that there were some hard games coming up which the team would struggle against, seems to be coming true, with an 8-0 loss (and the goalkeeper being 'man of the match'!). At least they built up a good bank of points at the start of the season!

The under 14s were away to FC Clacton on a very wet and boggy pitch and were on the end of a 3-1 defeat.  Although the match saw 2 superb goals from the home team - one of which was a first time shot on the run from outside the area into the top corner - the match will be remembered by all that were there for an - at best dismal, at worst, biased - performance by the referee, and for the first time a Bergholt Heath manager scored the referee below the threshold at which we need to submit (and have written) a letter to the League.  The home team failed to advise Bergholt that the referee was their own appointment and that he was a brother of one of the players.  We were also advised when this information came to light that he was an FA approved referee, however we have since checked and he is not on the current FA list.  During the match the referee failed to award Bergholt a clear goal, continuously overruled his assistants to give throw-ins to the home team, and totally ignored several clear (and a few dangerous) fouls on the Bergholt players, each time saying "I didn't see it".  Enough said.  Bergholt Heath goal scorer: Oliver Sanderson. Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 14th October 2012

On a bright and crisp Autumn Sunday morning,Bergholt Heath Under 8s came up against local rivals Eight Ash Green.   It was the visitors who stole a march on their hosts and within a minute found the back of the Bergholt net.  Bergholt then settled down and enjoyed some possession of their own but EAG were much stronger and scored another 3 before half-time - the fourth goal being the proverbial "30 yard screamer" into the top of the net.   The second half was a repeat of the first half with the visitors scoring early on and then going onto score another 3 to make the final score 0-8.  Credit to Bergholt for never letting their heads drop. Well played to Eight Ash Green on their win.

Due to the odd number of teams in their league, the Under 10s were the spare team and therefore had a free weekend.

Slightly later in the day - and later than expected with the previous game going into extra time - the Under 14s got their (short lived) Essex County Cup campaign going away to Writtle Minors from the Chelmsford League.  Bergholt started brightly and within the first few minutes had 2 or 3 good opportunities to open the scoring.  Writtle were camped deep in their own half and their only thought was to boot the ball long and hard to their 2 speedy front mean to chase.  From one such clearance Writtle won a corner when their left winger crossed for the Bergholt defender to steer behind.  Unfortunately from the corner, Bergholt were slow coming out after the ball had been cleared and this left the Writtle striker an easy task of poking a hopeful ball into the net from the edge of the 6 yard box - with a defender playing him well on side - still watching play from almost his own goal line!  The remainder of the half saw play return to the previous pattern but the Writtle goalkeeper seemed to have magnets in his gloves, the amount of times the ball went straight into them!  A half time talk by the manager sent Bergholt out with even more determination and again the Writtle goal was living a charmed life.   In desperation to find an elusive goal Bergholt switched to 3 at the back for the last 10 minutes, but still shots were either off target or within reach of the 'keeper.   In the last minute, with 8 of the Bergholt players camped in the Writtle half probing for a goal, another long ball out of defence saw the under manned Bergholt defence split, the left winger chasing the ball down and curling a shot into the roof of the net as the Bergholt defender desperately tried to close him down.  Final result: Writtle 2 - 0 Bergholt Heath. The Under 18s were also away, but in league action, to Maldon Saints, and came away with a good 3-2 win. the Bergholt goals came courtesy of Jake Heap, Jack Lugar and Alex Enright.

Bergholt Heath YFC Results & Fixtures 7th October 2012

Unfortunately Bergholt Heath's Under 8s run of consecutive defeats continued at their away trip to Halstead. The first half was a very even affair, with the only difference between the teams being in the "Goals For" column. Halstead scored twice before Thomas Haworth's corner was deflected into the net by the defender on the Halstead goal line for Bergholt's second goal of the season.  Bergholt went into the second half full of optimism but were once again susceptible to counter-attacks and Halstead added three more to make the final score 5-1 to the home team.

The Under 10s also saw their superb run at the start of the season come to an end at home to pre-season title favourites Clare Town Lions.  Despite putting in a battling rearguard action against a fast flowing Clare attack, the visitors ran out clear 5-0 winners.  Hopefully back to winning ways next week!

The Under 14s were also at home to Wivenhoe Youth, looking to get back on track after last weeks poor showing. The team looked much sharper this week with some neat passing football cutting the visitors open time and again, but it took a break from the back by Sam Clark, who finished with a powerful drive into the far corner from just inside the area, to break the deadlock mid way through the first half.  Within minutes of the second half starting, Bergholt were 2-0 up, James Holden chasing a long high through ball, and out jumping the central defender to head over the 'keeper and into the next.  A couple of minutes later and it was 3-0 with James again reacting quickly in the area to poke the ball in at the far post from close range.   Substitutions broke the rhythm and allowed Wivenhoe to come back into the match courtesy of some long direct balls from back to front cutting out the Bergholt midfield and pressurising the Bergholt full-backs.  From one such direct move Wivenhoe pulled a goal back, only for Mickey Whittle to immediately restore Bergholt's 2 goal advantage with a shot that the Wivenhoe 'keeper probably should have done a bit better with.  Wivenhoe continued their more direct approach to the game and pulled another goal back with a long ball over the top and shot from the end of the area that Connor Welfare in the Bergholt goal got his hand to, but despite a vain attempt by Sam Clark to clear off the line the ball ended up in the back of the net. Final score: Bergholt Heath 4-2 Wivenhoe. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': James Holden.

To complete the set of home fixtures, the Under 18s entertained Alresford Colne Rangers in round 1 of the League Cup, and a comfortable 3-1 win sees Bergholt into the hat for the round 2 draw.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 30th September 2012

The Under 8s were at home on the Poors Field against Stanway Villa Yellows. The two teams started the game brightly and shared in the early exchanges, however Stanway took an early lead with a powerful strike which gave the Bergholt 'keeper no chance.  From then on the game was a very even affair with both defences playing very well ensuring goal scoring chances were kept to a minimum. This was a much improved performance from Bergholt and shows that the boys are learning with every game.  Full Time 0-1.

Our Under 10s remain unbeaten this season, holding Halstead Yellows to a 2-2 draw away from home. Matt Sanderson and Thomas Whitlow scoring the Bergholt Heath goals.

The Under 14s were at home to Brooklands and had one of their strangely quiet performances.   The match started with Bergholt almost camped inside the Brookland half but all too often attacks petered out against a deep sitting defence through lack of a final ball. A part from a couple of free kicks from Bergholt nothing much of note happened in the first half: 0-0 at half time.

The second half saw Brooklands pushing forward more and from one attack, the Brooklands striker was left one on one with the 'keeper after an injury saw the Bergholt defender collapse when he was just about to clear the ball (later taken to hospital with a suspected broken foot diagnosed as bad bruising).  Almost immediately Bergholt equalised, Sam Clark heading in from a corner.  This did not, however, spur Bergholt into life, with too many players looking like they had spent their sleep time playing FIFA13.  A second goal for Brooklands came after the Bergholt team collectively failed to clear the ball on the edge of their area, and just before the final whistle Brooklands hit Bergholt on the break with a good run and shot from their big number 10.  Final result: Bergholt Heath 1 - 3 Brooklands.  Bergholt 'man of the match': James Hirst.

The Under 18s were also at home on the Poors Field but their superb start to the season is rapidly fading as they fell to a 4-0 defeat to Little Oakley Reds.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 23rd September 2012

Our Under 8s are still looking for their first win after coming up against a good Long Melford side. The first half saw the majority of the play in the Bergholt half of the pitch and Melford took an early lead which was doubled mid-way through the half via a stroke of bad luck for Bergholt when at a Long Melford corner, the defender's near post clearance spun off of his foot and into the net. HT 0-2. The second half saw Bergholt trying to push forward and get into the game. However, Long Melford capitalised and added a third. The fourth goal came from a long free kick which eluded everyone and bounced into the net. Bergholt never gave up and nearly got the reward for their efforts but Theo Baker's rasping drive was well saved by the keeper. As Bergholt tried to get something out of the game, Long Melford added to their misery by getting a fifth in the last few minutes of the game. FT 0-5.

The Under 10s were also at home, to Boadicea Dynamos, and carried on their superb start to the season winning 5-1 to stay top of the West League!

Our Under 14s were away to Bures United and came away with a creditable 1-1 draw from what was a physical battle. After a scrappy first half that saw Bures have the lions share of possession and chances with the Bergholt defence making some important last ditch tackles, Bergholt started the second half in a more positive manner. However mid way through the half a lucky deflection in the box saw the home team take the lead with the ball landing kindly at the strikers feet to blast into the net. Bergholt did not drop their heads and some good play down the left allowed Mickey Whittle the chance to hit a shot into the top near corner from around 10 yards out. The jury is still out on whether that's where he meant it to go! The remainder of the game was played out with scrappy play and a few niggles. A Bures player was booked and another given a final warning as they tried to impose themselves on the Bergholt team. Right at the last whistle the carded Bures player got himself involved in yet another confrontation and was lucky to stay on the pitch with a Bergholt player picking up a yellow card for pushing. Final score: Bures United 1 - 1 Bergholt Heath. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': Sam Clark.

The Under 18s were at home on the 11-a-side pitch on the Poors Field, against Frinton & Walton, who are probably the strongest team in the division. Unfortunately Bergholt lost the match 3-1.

Bergholt Heath YFC Results & Fixtures 16th September 2012

Our Under 8s had their first away match of the season as they traveled to Braintree to play Great Bradfords U8. The first half saw the home team take full advantage of the slope and they took a 2-0 lead into half-time. The second half saw Bergholt Heath come into the game and have more possession but they still couldn't break through the resolute Great Bradfords defence and were always susceptible to the attacking threat of the home team as they sought their first goal. The home team went into a 3-0 lead before Bergholt got their first goal of the season through a penalty which was emphatically dispatched by Theo Baker. Seizing their chance to score more Bergholt pushed forward and nearly scored again but Theo's effort smacked against the upright and back into the arms of the grateful keeper. But in the last few minutes of the game, Bergholt were once again caught out by the counter-attack as Great Bradfords added a fourth. On the balance of play the final score of 4-1 was a bit harsh on Bergholt Heath, but well played to Great Bradfords.

The Under 10s continued their superb start to the season beating Layer Colts 6-0 at home on the Poors field. An emphatic score which could have been even higher! They now sit proudly at the top of the league after 2 games having scored eight goals and yet to concede one!

The Under 14s were also at home, to Long Melford. Melford took the lead within a minute of the kick off, Bergholt losing the ball cheaply in midfield and allowing the striker far too much time and space on the left edge of the area to curl a superb shot into the top corner. This knocked Bergholt back and it took a while for them to settle down and start playing some football. The first time they really played their usual passing game, Bergholt equalised when James Holden managed to stretch to divert the ball over the line from a low cross with less than 10 minutes to go in the first half. Bergholt started to impose themselves on the game and other half chances came and went early in the second half. Not too dissimilar to last week, Bergholt were unlucky to hit the upright and then have 2 shots cleared off the line. The winner came after Mickey Whittle was brought down from behind in the area (moving away from goal), Oliver Sanderson coolly dispatching the resulting penalty. Final score: Bergholt Heath 2 -1 Long Melford. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': Oliver Sanderson.

The Under 18s were away to FC Clacton, but could not continue their impressive form from last week despite having more players in the squad. FC Clacton ran out clear winners with the final score reading 4-0 to the home team.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results 9th September

Our new Under 8s were against Reed Hall Sentinels.  In the first half Bergholt Heath went into their opening game of the campaign full of optimism but also with some trepidation having never played together against other opposition. After a few minutes it was clear to all that it was going to be a fairly even contest, with both sides cancelling each other out. Reed Hall had the better of the early exchanges but some great defending and 'keeping from Bergholt kept them at bay. In fact, the first clear opportunity came Bergholt's way through a one-on-one but the shot was well saved on the line by the Reed Hall keeper. This save triggered Reed Hall into life and they broke the deadlock towards the end of the first half. HT 0-1.

The second half was once again a very even affair, however Reed Hall stretched their lead as they converted their chances and took a 3-0 lead. Bergholt had their own chances, firstly a scramble in the box lead to a good shot on goal but the keeper saw it through a crowd of players. The Bergholt crowd were hoping that at least they would see a first goal and it so nearly came in the last minute when the pressure the home team exerted nearly paid off. However the goal-bound shot, which had beaten the keeper hit a Reed Hall defender and deflected off for a corner. In the end that was the final goalmouth action and the final score ended 0-3. Well played to Reed Hall and well done to Bergholt Heath who did very well in their first ever game. Thanks to Pete for refereeing.

The Under 10s started this season off in the same manner as they played most of the the second half of last season, comfortably winning 2-0 away to Marks Tey in the West League.

The Under 14s, under a new manager this season but with the core of the team unchanged, were away to the League champions Cornard Dynamos. After Bergholt hit the woodwork 3 times in the first half, then for a 4th time in the second half, Cornard took the lead after hitting the woodwork for the first time, with the ball dropping kindly for their striker to slot the rebound in the net! 10 minutes later and it was 2-0 with a headed goal from a corner, although the Bergholt players were convinced it was a foul on the 'keeper, who was being pulled back by a forward as he came for the cross. There was still time for Bergholt to hit the woodwork for a 5th time and then in a goalmouth scramble have 5 or 6 attempts on goal, the final one of which was blocked by a Bergholt pl ayer trying to jump out of the way! Final result: Cornard Dymamos 2 - 0 Bergholt Heath. Bergholt 'man of the match': Jamie Bowden.

Last but not least, our Under 18s kicked their season off at home - on the Poors Field - against Alresford. Despite only having the bare 11 players and starting the match at 2pm in 28C, Bergholt were comfortable 2-1 winners.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results 13th May 2012

The final match of the 2011-12 season for Bergholt Heath was our Under 13s playing their last league match away to Stanway Rovers, which actually took place on the Poors field due to continued water-logging at Spring Lane.  Bergholt started this match far better than against the same opposition on Tuesday evening, and took the game to Stanway in what was an evenly matched contest.  Bergholt took the lead after 10 minutes when a good move down the right allowed Antonio Sabini time and space on the edge of the box to curl a left-footed effort into the top corner for his 27th goal of the season. Stanway Rovers seemed a little shocked and a few minutes later it was almost 2-0 when more good play carved them open, only for the striker to hit the post.  Stanway worked their way back into the game and almost a carbon copy of the Bergholt goal saw their striker curl the ball into the top of the net to equalise before half time. Two superb goals to grace what was proving to be an entertaining game.

The second half continued in much the same fashion as the first, although Stanway were dropping deeper looking to hit Bergholt on the break.  From one such move Stanway took the lead when an opportunist shot from just inside the box squirmed under the diving body of the Bergholt 'keeper and trickled over the line.   Bergholt continued to pour forward but as time wore on the play got increasingly ragged.   There were some moments when it looked like they would equalise; a header over the bar from a corner, a shot that clipped off the top of the bar and another just wide, but in the end the game petered out to confirm a disappointing end to the season with a 2-1 defeat - the first back to back losses for the team against the only team to do the 'double' over them. Looking back over the Under 13's season, it was successful and could have proved to be a winning one, but in the end it fizzled out a little; two semi final defeats in both the Open and League Cups, and a second-placed finish in the "A" league, having done the 'double' over the champions!  After Sundays game the manager of the team, Dominic Sabini, confirmed that he would be leaving the Club after 5 seasons as both his boys have been approached to play in the higher "Eastern Junior Alliance League", where they will be playing teams from Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. Simon Ashurst has agreed to step in to his shoes. Thanks Dominic, and welcome Simon.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Result 8th May

The Under 13's played their penultimate match of the season in a fixture switched to the Poors field due to water logging at the home of our opponents, Stanway Rovers. Needing to win both remaining matches with a goal difference of +13 to win the "A" league title on goal difference, Bergholt started with a very attacking formation. Unfortunately within the first minute Bergholt were a goal behind, a midfielder losing the ball too easily on our first attack: the Stanway Rovers player took the ball on and played a superb - if unchallenged - curling cross into the area for the striker to run onto and slot into the net. Within 5 minutes Bergholt were two behind. Again the ball was lost cheaply in midfield. The other striker got away from the defender, who failed to put a challenge in, and beat the goalkeeper at his near post: a catalogue of errors! Bergholt were failing to get into the game - the Stanway Rovers players looked far more like league title challengers and were first to every ball - and it was no surprise when another decisive break from midfield resulted in a Bergholt player desperately lunging at the ball in the area only to get the players' legs first. A penalty resulted, which was slotted into the net for 3-0. A couple of minutes later a ball was played into the box which the Bergholt 'keeper attempted to catch under pressure from 2 strikers, one of which bundled into him from behind. The keeper tried to grab the loose ball as the referee blew his whistle - for a penalty! He adjudged the 2 strikers not to be fouling the keeper, but the keeper to be pushing one of them to grab the ball, and duly booked him to make the second ever booking for a Bergholt U13 player - coincidently both by the same referee! Note this was the same referee as for the Heybridge semi-final a few weeks ago who did not give a foul for the same striker jumping at the Bergholt keeper and making no contact with the ball (resulting in a goal). Justice was done when, for the second time in a week, Connor Welfare in goal saved a penalty. Half time score; Bergholt Heath 0-3 Stanway Rovers.

After a half time roasting from the manager when he rightly pointed out that however poor the referee was (and he was bad!), the players had been equally at fault for their poor play, Bergholt started the second half looking far more lively. A couple of close calls with the ball going the wrong side of the post and just over the bar, and Bergholt were given a lifeline with the referee awarding another dubious penalty which was dispatched at the second attempt by Antonio Sabini after the referee correctly ruled that the keeper had moved at least a yard off his line before it was taken. Bergholt continued to push forward in what was a totally different performance to the first half, although there tended to be a lack of composure at times. However yet again the referee played a major part in the match when he failed to spot a two handed push in the back of a Bergholt defender who was sent sprawling for the striker to run through and put the ball in the net. The referee's assistant confirmed that although he clearly saw the foul he had been instructed by the referee before the match that he was only allow to flag for throw ins and off-sides as the referee would call everything else (or not as the case may be). Another few minutes and again the referee got involved by awarding yet another penalty - his 4th of the match - this time to Bergholt for a push that nobody saw. Maybe he was making up for the Stanway player's push for the goal? Again Antonio Sabini finished coolly from the spot. The referee booked yet another Bergholt player (Gianni Sabini) after the goal, supposedly for swearing at the Stanway goalkeeper when he wouldn't give the ball back - that's 3 bookings this season, and all by the same referee! As the match entered its final minutes the game was almost exclusively played in the Stanway half with possession dominated, although with so many players pouring forward the defence was stretched at times which lead to a few heroics at the back with Stanway trying to hit Bergholt on the break. Unfortunately try as they might, the hill was too big for Bergholt to climb and the final whistle became a relief - I suspect for the referee as much as anyone as he looked totally out of his depth and in the two games we have seen him this season he has been the worst referee we have ever had officiating one of our matches (as demonstrated by the two lowest referee marks ever given). Bergholt Heath will finish second in the "A" league this year behind Cornard Dynamos (who they did the double over!). Final result: Bergholt Heath 2 - 4 Stanway Rovers. Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 6th May 2012

Our Under 9s played 2 matches this week to finish their season in the 'end of Season Trophy'.  The first was the rearranged way match Vs Clacton United on Wednesday evening where they lost 2-1. The second match was also away over the weekend, at Long Melford, where they won 2-1 with goals from Matthew Sanderson and Thomas Whitlow.

Just the one match for our Under 13s, which should have been been played at Wivenhoe on Sunday, but was switched to the Poors field due to waterlogging at Wivenhoe after the change had been approved by the league.  A quick grass cut and white line marking on Saturday afternoon got the pitch ready for a 10am kick off.   The start of the match saw Bergholt uncharacteristically wobbly and if it hadn't been for Connor Welfare in goal, Bergholt would have been at least 2-0 down inside the first 10 minutes.  Bergholt slowly settled and Ollie Sanderson finished from close range to give Bergholt the lead, against the run of play, after around 15 minutes.   Ollie then scored his second from the edge of the area 10 minutes later which should have settled things down.  However Wivenhoe were given a way back into the game right on the stroke of half time when some poor play all round by Bergholt gave Wivenhoe the time and space to attack and score a fairly easy goal.  Two half time substitutions saw Bergholt have a better shape in the second half, but another mistake saw the Wivenhoe striker get through on goal only to be brought down in the box by the Bergholt 'keeper (probably a sending off in the professional game).  However he picked himself up and made amends by diving full length to his left to tip the penalty round the post to preserve the lead. This was pretty much the only opportunity Wivenhoe had in the second half.  Bergholt scored another goal when James Holden got free on the right and whipped in a lovely cross for Ben Ashurst to score his first ever goal with a first time finish into the net at the far post.   Final score: Bergholt Heath 3 - 1 Wivenhoe Blues.   Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': Connor Welfare.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 25th April 2012

Bergholt Heath YFC's Under 9s played their first ever mid-week game on Wednesday evening 25th April, away to Bures in the 'end of season trophy', and were comfortable 4-1 winners. The Bergholt goals were scored by Jonah Murray x 2, Matthew Sanderson and Thomas Whitlow.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 22nd April 2012

Having lost the use of the 'mini soccer' pitch on the Poors field, our Under 9s switched the fixture and played Wivenhoe Town away, and drew 0-0.

Our Under 13s were again in semi final action, this time in the open Cup, verses Cornard Dynamos, played at Wivenhoe Town FC. Unfortunately, as with the other semi final in the League Cup, the semi final is as far as they are going this season, losing 3-1.  Cornard took the lead after 15 minutes of the first half, the striker out muscling the central defender in a chase for a long ball, and finishing coolly. Bergholt slowly played their way back into the game and got closer and closer to an equaliser, which finally came after half an hour, Mickey Whittle getting the final touch, poking a low cross into the net from inside the 6 yard box - the ball going over the line in what seemed like slow motion! Unfortunately within 2 minutes Cornard were back in front, the strong number 9 again slipping past a defender and hitting a cross shot that seemed to confuse the Bergholt 'keeper with the ball dropping into the far corner of the net. The second half saw Bergholt huff and puff but not make too many inroads to the Cornard half, and Cornard seemed to win most of the 50-50 balls. A third Cornard goal came around 15 minutes from time, although it seemed to most that the Bergholt defender was pushed in the back when trying to clear the ball before it was squared for the striker to hit powerfully home. After this the game petered out a bit and Cornard safely saw the game out for a comfortable win. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': James Hirst.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 15th April 2012

Our Under 9s were away to Layer Colts in the next of their 'end of season trophy' games. Winning comfortably 2-0 at half time, both goals coming from Jonah Murray, the manager was able to switch things round at half time to try players in different positions. The second half was more even and despite 2 goals from the home side, further goals from Matthew Sanderson and Richard Frost saw Bergholt run out 4-2 winners.

The Under 13s were the only other team in action, at home to Wivenhoe Blues in the "A" league - after some last minute work on Saturday to get the pitch cut and marked after the contractors didn't do it last week as instructed! Although Bergholt didn't play particularly well - the players looking like they were still in Easter mood - Bergholt's fist corner resulted in the first goal of the match: the Wivenhoe 'keeper doing well to parry away a vicious in swinging corner from Gianni Sabini, only for his brother Antonio to react quickest to the lose ball by smashing it into the roof of the net from close range. Good work on the right by Owen Bernhardt saw him cross powerfully into the area for Antonio Sabini to be teed up to hit a well placed shot low into the corner of the net from just inside the area for 2-0 at half time. The second half saw Wivenhoe come out with renewed vigour and Bergholt appeared to be willing to sit back and let them attack. However mid way through the half Antonio Sabini completed his Hat-trick (goal number 24 for the season), for 3-0. Almost from the restart Wivenhoe pulled a goal back when the midfield not tracking their players let the Wivenhoe midfielders run through to join the attack and out number the defenders to score an easy jet avoidable goal. This seemed to wake Bergholt up a little and they had more shots in the last 10 minutes of the game than at any other time in the match without increasing the lead: Antonio Sabini having the pick of them with a powerful shot from at least 30 yards that thudded against the Wivenhoe bar. Final result: Bergholt Heath 3 - 1 Wivenhoe blues. Bergholt Heath 'man of the match': Antonio Sabini.

Bergholt Heath YFC - Results & Fixtures 1st April 2012

The Under 9s were in 'end of season trophy' action at home to Brightlingsea Regents. Bergholt took the lead mid way through the first half, Jonah Murray hitting home. However this was against the run of play against a very impressive Brightlingsea team who had a couple of very promising players on show. Brightlingsea equalised soon after Jonah's goal, the striker heading in a good cross. Brightlingsea then went further ahead just before half time with a confident shot from their number 11. The second half saw Bergholt try and get into the game and they had a couple of good attempts just go wide, and the Brightlingsea 'keeper also saved well on at least 2 occasions. However Brighlingsea scored their third and final goal on the stroke of full time. Final result: Bergholt Heath 1 - 3 Brightlingsea Regents.

Our Under 13s were in the semi final of the League Cup, Vs Heybridge at Wivenhoe Town FC. Bergholt made what seems to be their customary slow start and were a goal down inside 3 minutes when a Heybridge striker picked up a clearance and with no Bergholt player closing him down, hit an early shot into the top corner from the edge of the area. Bergholt slowly got their game going on what was a very hard and bumpy pitch and equalised via an Antonio Sabini free kick which he curled round the wall, and despite other players trying to get a final touch, it bounced into the net. Half time 1-1. The second half started with Bergholt changing formation to 3-5-2 to get hold of the midfield, and they had much better possession. However a defensive slip from a huge (foul?) throw into the area saw Heybridge retake the lead against the run of play. Bergholt pressed forward and around 10 minutes from time again equalised with Leo Tiffney converting a cross at the far post. Almost immediately Heybridge retook the lead in controversial circumstances. The Bergholt Keeper leaped to catch a high long ball and was jumped into by the striker. Rather than give a foul the referee singled for a corner which was taken quickly and bundled into the net with the 'keeper still looking a little unsteady. Bergholt threw caution to the wind to try and get a third equaliser but were caught on the break with a couple of minutes to go, the tall Heybridge number 10 rounding the 'keeper and slotting home. Final score: Heybridge Swifts 4 - 2 Bergholt Heath. Bergholt 'man of the match: Ollie Sanderson.
